why Become a Foster Carer?

Why foster a child? Whatever the circumstances, children need to be looked after. Caring for children isn’t always easy and they need families that are sensitive and non-judgemental.

During this initial period, social services investigate and try their best to resolve the issues. Understandably, children are often hurt, angry and confused by the situation and they often require a lot of reassurance and support.

That is why the role of a foster carer is so vital in supporting the child and helping them make sense of their situation.

Aspen House is the first of our residential homes will offer boys a place to heal from past traumas with support. Ascent Family Homes offer children’s residential placements, and builds on the services offered by Ascent Fostering Agency to offer a therapeutic space for young people.

The name Ascent came about as we explored our hope for children and young people, like many parents and carers we hope to watch our children grow, rise like a balloon and slowly drift away in the knowledge that they are still connected and have the skills they need to deal with life.

WHAT IS FOSTERING?

Each day in the UK, children enter the care system because of difficulties in their family circumstances.

Fostering is looking after someone else’s child whilst social services work with the family to resolve issues.

The reasons children come into care are complex and varied. It could be because a parent could not cope or issues of neglect and abuse.

TYPES OF FOSTERING

Children require different types of care; its part of a foster carer’s role to be sensitive to the particular needs of those they look after. Younger children demand a lot of practical support and, hands-on attention and possibly high contact levels with their birth family. A teenager, however, may benefit more if the carer takes the role of a mentor, guiding and preparing them for independence.

This can include parent and child fostering, looking after school-age children or teenagers. Foster carer can look after children in the short or long term. Call us to find out more.
